Lava Movement
Friday, July 31, 2009 • 1:36 PM • 0 comments

We already told you about the parts of a volcano. You must be wondering what happens with the lava. How does it get to the surface? All of the magma is created in the asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is the layer of molten rock just beneath the continental plates. The magma slowly rises through the lithosphere. It rises because it's hot and because of the increased pressure below. The magma slowly moves up the vents. Eventually passages called diapers are created. And behold! The lava flows from the volcano! Want to know some more??? Please click at http://www.geography4kids.com/files/earth_volcano.html

Structure Basics
• 1:28 PM • 0 comments

structure of vents in a volcano We'll start at the bottom when we look at the structure of a volcano. All of the molten rock in the asthenosphere finds weaknesses in the crust. The molten rock creates a main passageway called a central vent. As the magma rises, secondary vents develop. Those secondary ones are just smaller and branch from the main tube. At the top of the volcano, at its highest point, is a crater. Some volcanoes have something called a caldera. A caldera forms when a volcano gets hollow and then collapses on itself. A caldera could look like a large indentation on the side of the volcano or it could happen at the very top. Please visit at "http://www.geography4kids.com/files/earth_volcano.html".

Types of Volcanoes
• 1:12 PM • 0 comments

Today, I want to share you some story called "Types of Volcanoes".

mount st helens is classified as a stratovolcano There are two main types of volcanoes "shield and composite". Shield volcanoes are usually found in the middle of tectonic plates. Islands like Hawai'i are good examples of this type of volcano. There's a hole in the middle of the plate and magma moves out and piles on top of itself, slowly building a mountain of rock. That magma comes from small tunnels which scientists call vents.

The other big type is a composite volcano. This type of volcano is usually what you think of as a volcano. It's shaped like a cone and mainly made up of ash, which has piled up and compacted over the years. You'd find these volcanoes in subduction zones like Mount Ararat in Turkey. The stuff that comes out is smaller. There's not so much lava but lots of small rocks and a lot of ash. Those rocks are called pyroclastic. EXPLORING MARS
• 1:09 PM • 0 comments

Many probes have visited Mars through the years because it is so close to Earth. Viking, Pathfinder, Sojourner, and Mariner are only a few. The Viking Lander checked out the surface of Mars in the 1970's. It sent back some great pictures of the red surface of the planet. The surface is a reddish color because the rocks and crust are chock full of iron compounds. For several years, the two Mars Exploration Rovers have been studying the surface rocks in detail. They have been able to travel to many locations in a small area. With patience, the rovers have made many new discoveries about the geologic history of Mars.

All of these probes have also shown us a great deal of the Martian surface. Mars has the largest volcano ever discovered. It has been named Olympus Mons and is one of the most amazing features of the planet. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will soon photograph the location in higher resolution than before. The probes have also discovered many channels that cross the surface. Those channels may have been created by flowing water and erosion on the surface and the mountains.

ANY LIFE UP THERE?
• 1:08 PM • 0 comments

Scientists still hold out hope for life on Mars. Mars had lots of water. Right now, there are ice caps on the surface. At one time, there may have been water in liquid form under the surface of the planet. Recent discoveries by the Mars Exploration Rovers have proven the existence of water by discovering hematite. Where there is water, there could be life. Mars also has weather and a heat source. The atmosphere circulates around the planet and there are volcanoes on the surface.

Fields Of Magnetic Forces

Fields Of Magnetic Forces

image of the earth's magnetic field strength We glossed over the idea that the outer core of the Earth creates the magnetic field and the magnetosphere for the planet. How does it do it? The molten iron flows like a huge river. If you take a physics course, you'll learn that magnetism and electricity are very closely related. As the iron rivers flow, they create an electric current. That current creates the magnetic field that surrounds the planet. The magnetic field created in the center of the planet makes your compass point north and protects the Earth from solar winds. MARS IN THE FOURTH POSITION
• 12:59 PM • 0 comments

Today, I want to tell you about "MARS IN THE FOURTH POSITION".

NASA has several Mars missions planned for the next decade. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is a very active planet like the Earth. It has evidence of volcanoes, plate tectonics, and liquid water (as opposed to ice) on the planet. It even has polar ice caps like the Earth, with water in the north and solid carbon dioxide in the south. With all of these similarities, Mars is still nothing like Earth. It only has 40% of our gravity because the mass of the planet is so much smaller. Also, its atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide and has less than 1% of the atmospheric pressure of Earth.

Meteorites?
• 12:57 PM • 0 comments

That's right, not all rocks are from Earth. Sure you can debate whether a meteorite is a rock, but you definitely find them all over the Earth. Some super big ones have created massive craters across the globe. Most scientists now believe that a super-massive meteorite hit the Earth and created an extinction event for the dinosaurs. There are also millions of tiny meteorites. They look just like rocks until you break them open. Meteorites are mainly made of iron and nickel. You will also find many smaller trace elements. The key thing to remember about meteorites is that they have much different percentages of elements than rocks on Earth. Many trace elements found on these space travelers are nearly impossible to find on Earth.

Sedimentary Rocks
• 12:56 PM • 0 comments

The last of the big three rock types is probably the rarest... unless you live near the coast. Sedimentary rock types are created when sediment compresses. It's pretty simple. Here's the setup... A river flows through a canyon and picks up a bunch of silt. That sediment and silt runs downstream and deposits where the river ends. It could be in a flood plain or a valley, but we're using a coastline as an example. When that material gets to the beach, it sits there. Now if you watch this happen over millions of years, more and more sediment builds up and compacts. That compacted sediment eventually becomes a type of rock. Examples of sedimentary rock include sandstone, amber, anthracite, and limestone.

Metamorphic Rocks
• 12:53 PM • 0 comments

This rock type is created by heat and/or pressure. Even though heat is involved, they didn't start off as molten rock. But. You often find metamorphic rock near volcanoes and sources of super hot rock. The heat from the magma changes all of the rock around it. Try another explanation. Look at the name 'metamorphic.' It looks like the word used to describe insects that go through a metamorphosis. It's the same concept. Some force (heat/pressure) has changed these rocks from one type into a new type. The result is a metamorphic rock. Some examples are marble, jade, slate, and gneiss. Because pressure and heat are involved, these rock types are usually found deep beneath the surface. They are also found near fault lines where plates push against each other and create enormous pressures. Over time, because of the movement of the crust, these metamorphic rocks are pushed to the surface where you can find them every day.

FEATURED ANIMAL
Thursday, July 30, 2009 • 7:42 PM • 0 comments

Northern Sparrowhawk.

The Northern Sparrowhawk is a long tailed hawk with short, rounded wings. Males are slatey-gray above, with dark bars on tail; pale underparts finely barred reddish-brown; rufous cheeks and flanks; orange eyes. Female darker gray-brown above, with underparts barred gray; white stripe above yellow eye. Yellow legs and base of bill.

They breed in Spring. The nest is built most often by the female, in a tree; a loose platform of twigs lined with leafy twigs. They have 2-7 bluish-white eggs, spotted, blotched, or streaked with dark brown, incubated by the female for 32-35 days.

The Northern Sparrowhawk is fast and agile for hunting other birds in the confined spaces of the forest. Its relatively short wings and long tail give this bird maneuvrability and a compact profile it needs to go through the trees going after its prey. It takes it prey by surprise, often darting out or flying low in a hedge before bursting out to pluck a songbird from it perch. It will carry its prey to a spot and go to work on it with its hooked bill, and it is not uncommon for these perches to be surrounded by feathers and the discarded remains of prey.

In the open space it has a low, fast flap and slide flight, but it can also soar highinto the air.

Igneous Rocks
• 7:35 PM • 0 comments

Rocks And Minerals

Let's start off with an explanation that rocks and minerals are different things. Rocks are groups of different minerals pushed together and combined. They don't have easy chemical formulas to describe their makeup. A ruby is considered a mineral. It's a nice pretty crystal with the same compounds throughout the object. But the rock that surrounds that ruby has many many different compounds (and even a few pieces of ruby mixed in). There's an easier example that many people can relate to. Think about quartz. On its own (as a mineral) it's a nice pretty crystal. But a piece of granite often has loads of quartz. It's ground up and crushed, but its still bits of quartz. Granite is a rock and quartz is a mineral.

rocks that are from lava and magma are defined as igneous

Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks are the ones that were superheated and originally liquid. They come from the center of the Earth! Not really the center, but they often start their lives below the crust and then get pumped out. There are two basic types of igneous rocks. There are the rocks that make it to the surface (extrusive) and the ones that are stuck in the crust just below the surface (intrusive). These igneous types have all hardened after being molten rock. If you walk around a volcano, you will find those extrusive types. The intrusive types are usually found in areas called plutons and dikes, big old pools of molten rock that were just beneath the surface. Some examples of igneous rock are granite, all volcanic rock, basalt, and obsidian.

The Plates And A Liquid In The Core
• 7:28 PM • 0 comments

The Plates

There are also huge landmasses on our planet. The rock plates that float across the surface are called tectonic plates. Those plates float on the mantle. The mantle is an area between the core and the crust. That mantle is basically filled with molten rock. It is kept in a liquid state because of the energy given off by the center (core) of the Earth. Scientists have also discovered that the pressure increases as you move towards the center of the planet. The core of the Earth has extreme temperatures and pressures that keep the iron and metals liquid and flowing.

Aurora borealis as seen from international space station

And A Liquid In The Core

The flowing metal in our planet helps create something called a dynamo effect. Dynamos create large magnetic fields. In the case of the Earth, the magnetic field protects our planet from space. The region of magnetic protection is called the magnetosphere and protects us from the solar winds and solar radiation. You can see where solar winds and the magnetosphere collide in the aurora borealis. Please visit at http://www.geography4kids.com/files/earth_intro.html if you want to know more.

About The Earth

The Earth The third planet from the Sun is your home. The Earth is the only known planet where life can survive. As far as we know, there is no other planet in the universe like Earth. We have a very narrow temperature range that allows water to remain a liquid. Life has developed over millions of years because of that liquid. What else makes us special? We have an atmosphere made up of nitrogen, a relatively inert gas. If we had clouds of sulfuric acid or methane, life may never have developed. Want some more??? OKAY! Let's start here...

Many of you may not be familiar with PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY. It's the biggest EARTH SCIENCE around. It uses many ideas from other sciences that you have seen before. We can only begin to explain how ideas from many different fields combine into the knowledge of physical geography. You will find information from chemistry, biology, physics, climatology, astronomy and many other sciences.

One big thing to remember... This kind of geography is not about countries and gross domestic products. Physical geography is all about the Earth and the things that happen on Earth. Humans are only one part of the overall equation.

If you're saying, "Where do I start with so much information about the Earth?" Don't worry. There's one common thing that is found throughout the universe... ENERGY. We suggest starting your explorations there. We'll introduce many concepts about the flow of energy on Earth and then lead you into other ideas on the site.

That's it for the introduction. Now its up to you to click and have fun! GEOGRAPHY4KIDS is one of many free science sites developed by our team. You may have also used Biology4Kids, Chem4Kids, Cosmos4Kids, or Physics4Kids. We even have a math site called NumberNut.com.

Now it's time for you to dive into our physical geography pages and start learning. Remember, the site offers an introduction to the earth sciences. If you're not into graphics like home page image above, check out the site map where we list all of the pages of the site for you. Start clicking and have fun! PENGORBANAN IBU TIADA TANDINGANNYA.....
• 4:49 PM • 0 comments

Hi semua.babai

Janganlah kita mengecewakannya.

I LOVE YOU MOTHER...lovelove

How To Read Efficiently

by Dennis Doyle

For most people, it is easy to learn to read faster. Your reading rate is often just a matter of habit. But to begin, you may need to try to change some habits and try these tips:

1. Pay attention

when you read and read as if it really matters. Most people read in the same way that they watch television, i.e. in an inattentive, passive way. Reading takes effort and you must make the effort. A wise teacher once told me that you can learn anything if you do three things:

PAY ATTENTION

PAY ATTENTION and

PAY ATTENTION.

There are some simple methods that you can use to pay better attention and get more out of your textbook reading time. Different authors call it different things, but many researchers say that you will improve your comprehension if you somehow "preview" the passage before you actually sit down and read every word.

To do a preview you:

  • take 30 to 60 seconds.
  • look over the title of the chapter.
  • look at all the headings, subheadings and marked, italic or dark print.
  • look at any pictures or illustrations, charts or graphs.
  • quickly skim over the passage, reading the first and last paragraph and glancing at the first sentence of every other paragraph.
  • close the book and ask yourself:
  • ---What is the main idea?
  • ---What kind of writing is it?
  • ---What is the author's purpose?

You might not think that you could possibly answer these questions with so little exposure to the material, but if you do the preview correctly, you should have some very good general ideas. If you have a general idea of what the passage is about before you really read it, you will be able to understand and remember the passage better.

When you finally get to the point where you are actually slowly reading the passage, read in a "questioning" manner -as if you were seaching for something. It sometimes helps if you take the heading or title of a chapter and turn it into a question.

For example, if the heading of a section in the text is "The Causes of the Civil War", take that title and switch it into a question like: "What are the causes of the Civil War?". Now you have a goal; something to look for; something to find out. When you are goal-oriented, you are more likely to reach the goal. At least you'll remember one thing about the text which you have just read.

2. Stop talking to yourself when you read. People talk to themselves in 2 ways, by:

  • vocalizing, which is the actual moving of your lips as you read, and
  • subvocalizing, which is talking to yourself in your head as you silently read.

Both of these will slow you down to the point in which you find that you can't read any faster than you can speak. Speech is a relatively slow activity; for most, the average speed is about 250 WPM (words per minute).

Reading should be an activity which involves only the eyes and the brain. Vocalization ties reading to actual speaking. Try to think of reading as if you were looking at a landscape, a panorama of ideas, rather than looking at the rocks at your feet.

3. Read in thought groups.

Studies have shown that when we read, our eyes must make small stops along the line. Poor readers make many, many more fixations (eyestops) than good readers. Not only does this slow you down, but it inhibits comprehension because meaning is easier to pull from groups of words rather than from individual words or even single letters. Try to read in phrases of three or four words, especially in complete clauses and prepositional phrases. Your mind may internalize them as if the whole phrase is like one big meaning-rich word.

4. Don't keep re-reading the same phrases.

Poor readers habitually read and re-read the same phrase over and over again. This habit of making "regressions" doubles or triples reading time and often does not result in better comprehension. A single careful, attentive reading may not be enough for full comprehension, but is often more effective than constant regressions in the middle of a reading. It is best to work on paying closer attention the first time through. Do a preview first before the careful reading and try the tips I mentioned above. You'll remember better without the rereading.

5. Vary your reading rate to suit the difficulty and type of writing of the text.

Poor readers always read at the same slow rate. An efficient reader speeds up for easier material and slows down for the hard. Some things were not meant to be read quickly at all. Legal material and very difficult text should be read slowly. Easier material and magazines and newspapers can be read quickly. Poetry and plays were meant to be performed, and if not acted out, then at least, spoken out loud orally. This obviously will conflict with good speed reading method which forbids vocalization. Religious writings and scripture were originally written to be recited and listened to by an audience which was likely to be intelligent, but illiterate. The "fun" of poetry, plays, or prayer is not really experienced if you "speed read" the text.

Happy Reading & enjoy whatever you read...
